Cosmetic Gum Shaping in Maize, KS

Do you feel self-conscious about excessive gum tissue or an uneven gumline? If so, a cosmetic dentist can assist in improving your smile and self-assurance with cosmetic gum shaping. At Newton Dental Studio in Maize, KS, we provide gum shaping procedures to enhance the symmetry of your smile. Also referred to as tissue sculpting or gum reshaping, this treatment can result in a more aesthetically pleasing gumline.

Why is my smile gummy or my gums uneven?

Certain patients may experience a gummy smile or uneven gums as a result of genetic factors. However, in some cases, the excessive growth of gum tissue, known as gingival hyperplasia, can be triggered by specific medications or health conditions, including:
  • Medications such as calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure
  • Anti-seizure medications
  • Gum disease
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Vitamin deficiencies
Having a low or uneven gumline can make people feel self-conscious about their gummy smiles, as it can make teeth look small or misshapen. Excess gum tissue is often the cause of this issue.

Can you explain what gum shaping is?

At Newton Dental Studio, our dentists specialize in gum shaping, a procedure aimed at removing excess gum tissue to reveal more of the underlying tooth. This helps improve the appearance of teeth, making them look longer and more symmetrical.

How does the procedure unfold?

Initially, our doctors will administer a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Once adequately numbed, they will proceed to use a scalpel or soft-tissue laser to eliminate excess gum tissue and reshape the gumline. Throughout the procedure, patients remain awake, experiencing no discomfort. The duration varies based on the amount of gum tissue removal, typically lasting between one to two hours.

Is gum shaping painful?

During the procedure, patients might experience pressure but should not feel pain. However, afterward, they may experience mild to moderate discomfort. To alleviate postoperative pain and swelling, over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen are usually effective.

In cases where patients require stronger pain relief, Dr. Bo Davidson may prescribe prescription painkillers. Additionally, applying cold compresses or ice packs to the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes at a time can also help reduce swelling and provide relief from discomfort.

Can you please provide the recovery time?

Cosmetic gum shaping is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, resulting in a short recovery time. Most patients can resume their regular activities within 48 to 72 hours after the procedure. However, it may take several days or weeks for the reshaped gums to fully heal.

To minimize the risk of infection and expedite the recovery process, Dr. Bo Davidson may prescribe an antibiotic mouthwash. Additionally, patients are advised to modify their diets during the recovery period, opting for softer foods such as soups and smoothies for a few days following the procedure.
