Cosmetic Gum Shaping in Park City, KS

Do you feel self-conscious about your gummy smile or uneven gum tissue? If so, a cosmetic dentist can assist in improving your smile and boosting your confidence through cosmetic gum shaping. At Newton Dental Studio in Park City, KS, we provide gum shaping procedures to enhance the symmetry of your smile. Also referred to as tissue sculpting or gum reshaping, this treatment can result in a more even gumline.

Why do I have a gummy smile or uneven gums?

Certain patients may experience a gummy smile or uneven gums as a result of genetic factors. However, in some cases, the excessive growth of gum tissue, known as gingival hyperplasia, can be triggered by specific medications or health conditions, including:
  • Calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure
  • Anti-seizure medications
  • Gum disease
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Vitamin deficiencies
Having a low or uneven gumline can make people feel self-conscious about their gummy smiles, as it can make teeth look small or misshapen. Excess gum tissue is often the culprit behind this issue.

What is gum shaping?

Our cosmetic dentists at Newton Dental Studio specialize in gum shaping, a procedure that involves removing excess gum tissue to reveal more of the underlying tooth. This enhances the appearance of teeth, making them look longer and more symmetrical.

What is the procedure like?

Our doctors will start by applying a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Once the area is numb, they will use a scalpel or soft-tissue laser to remove excess gum tissue and reshape the gumline. Patients will be awake during the procedure and should not feel any discomfort. The length of the procedure will depend on the amount of gum tissue to be removed, usually taking between one to two hours.

Does gum shaping hurt?

During the procedure, patients may feel pressure but should not experience pain. Afterward, they may feel mild to moderate discomfort. To manage postoperative pain and swelling, over-the-counter painkillers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen are typically effective. If stronger pain relief is needed, Dr. Bo Zhang may prescribe prescription painkillers. Using cold compresses or ice packs on the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes at a time can also help reduce swelling and provide relief.

How long does it take to recover?

Cosmetic gum shaping is a minimally invasive surgical procedure with a short recovery time. Most patients can resume regular activities within 48 to 72 hours, but it may take days or weeks for gums to fully heal. To speed up recovery and reduce infection risk, Dr. Bo Davidson may recommend an antibiotic mouthwash and suggest a diet of softer foods like soups and smoothies for a few days post-procedure.
