Are you bothered by a gummy smile or uneven gum tissue? If that's the case, a cosmetic dentist can help enhance your smile and boost your confidence through cosmetic gum shaping. At Newton Dental Studio in Newton, KS, we offer transformative gum shaping procedures to improve the symmetry of your smile. Also known as tissue sculpting or gum reshaping, this procedure can create a beautifully even gumline.

Why do I have a gummy smile or uneven gums?

Some patients may develop a gummy smile or uneven gums due to genetic factors. However, in certain instances, the overgrowth of gum tissue, referred to as gingival hyperplasia, can be caused by particular medications or health conditions, such as:

  • Calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure
  • Anti-seizure medications
  • Gum disease
  • Autoimmune disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Vitamin deficiencies
Many individuals feel self-conscious about their gummy smiles due to a low or uneven gumline, which can cause teeth to appear small or misshapen. Regardless of the underlying cause, the presence of excess gum tissue can contribute to this issue.

What is gum shaping?

Our Newton Dental Studio cosmetic dentists perform gum shaping, a procedure that involves removing a small amount of excess gum tissue to reveal more of the underlying tooth. This enhances the appearance of teeth, making them appear longer and more symmetrical.

What is the procedure like?

First, our doctors will administer a local anesthetic to numb the treatment area. Once the area is adequately numbed, they will proceed to utilize a scalpel or soft-tissue laser to eliminate excess gum tissue and reshape the gumline.

Throughout the procedure, patients will remain awake, but they should not experience any discomfort. The duration of the procedure may vary depending on the amount of gum tissue that needs to be removed, typically lasting between one to two hours.

Does gum shaping hurt?

Patients may experience pressure during the procedure, but they should not feel any pain. However, after the procedure, patients may feel mild to moderate discomfort. To alleviate postoperative pain and swelling, over-the-counter painkillers such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen are usually effective.

In cases where patients require stronger pain relief, Dr. Bo Davidson may prescribe prescription painkillers. Additionally, applying cold compresses or ice packs to the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes at a time can help reduce swelling and provide relief from any discomfort.

How long does it take to recover?

Cosmetic gum shaping is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, resulting in a short recovery time. Most patients can return to their regular activities within 48 to 72 hours after the procedure. However, it may take several days or weeks for the reshaped gums to fully heal.

To minimize the risk of infection and expedite the recovery process, Dr. Bo Davidson can prescribe an antibiotic mouthwash. Additionally, they advise patients to modify their diets during the recovery period. This includes consuming softer foods such as soups and smoothies for a few days following the procedure.
